SIMPLY SUMPTUOUS MAPLE CREEK ESTATES (THE OTTAWA CITIZEN, 2010)

Down a rolling country road outside of Manotick is an estate home that celebrates nature and is named after an accomplished English architect, furniture and textile designer known for his Arts and Crafts styling. The Voysey is a grand gesture for Uniform Developments, a company known for Arts and Crafts homes inside the Greenbelt, red brick townhomes in the Kanata community of Beaverbrook and modern, stone homes in Rockcliffe Park. Uniform has also built appealing homes across from the 18-hole golf course in Stonebridge, but John MacDougall and Peter Stenger are now upping the ante, going big in their new Manotick community of Maple Creek Estates. The Voysey is Uniform’s poster child for comfortable, country living. At a grand 3,661 square feet, the stone and cedar Arts and Crafts home sits on a halfacre lot and features a triplecar garage to stash all of the family toys. The sprawling home is the largest in a series of nine plans for two-storey homes and bungalows. The smallest is the Richardson, a 2,481- square-foot bungalow with a heavy emphasis on glass, and a starting price of $770,000. The two-storey cedar and brick Voysey is the largest, starting at $835,000, plus $360,000 in sumptuous upgrades. All of the homes were designed by one of Ottawa’s leading architects, Barry Hobin, yet inspired by a star chamber of international architects and designers. For example the Voysey, a more traditional home, is named after Charles Francis Annesley Voysey (1857-1941), an English architect, furniture and textile designer, who was known in his early years for designing wallpapers, fabrics and furnishings. He is also known for his simple and original country homes. Maple Creek, which when finished will have 60 estate homes, also features a plan inspired by Francis Conroy Sullivan, a Kingston-born architect with ties to homes in Ottawa and the only Canadian apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright.
