Falling in Love with Fall
Full patios, parks full of kids playing, and just about everyone enjoying the last blast of warm weather. September is finally bringing us the Summer we never had! With record-breaking temperatures, it’s hard to believe that Fall is actually here. Our advice? Enjoy every minute because it won’t be long now before we’re pulling out our sweaters and boots, warm blankets and prepping the house for the cold winter months ahead.
Fall is certainly one of the most beautiful seasons in Ottawa – warm days, crisp nights and stunning Fall foliage changing colours around the city. We thought this would be the perfect time to embrace the beauty of the upcoming season with some fun fall activities for you, your family and your home!
Transitioning to Fall Around the Home
- Add a decorative wreath to your front door with warm colours and fall leaves to make your home feel more festive – later on you can include some festive twinkle lights to transition that piece to winter once the snow hits.
- October means one thing… pumpkins! Incorporate baskets filled with a variety of small to medium sized pumpkins and gourds to give your front step a harvest look. Accent your dining room table with tiny ones to bring the outside in. (They also make for perfect name card holders for your Thanksgiving table setting!)
- A fairly simple way to transition to fall is to switch out fabrics throughout your home. Include rich fabrics such as velvets, knits, and softer materials on your pillowcases, drapes and blankets. These warm fabrics will encourage you to get cozy while conveying a welcoming feeling for your guests to enjoy.
- Embrace the amazing aromas that fall has to offer. Pine, cinnamon, baked apples, and real wood burning fireplaces can be replicated through the use of scented candles! Make your home smell so good that your guests will never leave.
Family Fun Fall Activities
Ottawa is a big city with many of the charms of small town living. Scenic apple orchards and pumpkin patches are located along the outskirts of the city – homeowners in The Orchard might enjoy a trip to Mountain Orchards just a few minutes south of Barrhaven, while homeowners in Richardson Ridge can pop over to Pinewood Orchards on Herzburg Road in Kanata. There’s nothing that feels more like Fall than a family trip to the orchard to pick apples straight off the trees, into a barrel and right into a homemade dessert!
And speaking of desserts…
Homemade Pumpkin Pie
After a visit to the pumpkin patch, and with Thanksgiving right around the corner, who doesn’t love a good ol’ traditional pumpkin pie recipe for the family to enjoy. We grabbed this one from our Pinterest page.
