BUILDING COMMUNITY, ONE UNIFORM DEVELOPMENT AT A TIME

In the early 1990s, Ottawa-based Uniform, led by partners John MacDougall and Peter Stenger, expanded into residential developments following more than 10 years of industrial, commercial, and retail developments. As pioneers in design and community development, Uniform recognized early on that working with the community is vital. In the end, the collaboration between the developer, the architect, and the community is key.

Beginning with residential infill projects and to The Oaks of Island Park in 1996, Uniform’s first multiple-residence infill project which consisted of 19 three storey towns, Uniform Developments began to establish a reputation for excellence in both design, and craftsmanship.

It was also the beginning of Uniform’s relationship with Barry J. Hobin and Associates Architects, a relationship that continues to this day as each Uniform Development project, including current Uniform Developments projects at Richardson Ridge in Kanata and The Orchard in Barrhaven, is exclusively designed by Barry J. Hobin.

Uniform’s residential projects since The Oaks include recognized residential developments such as Mackay House, a four-storey, 27 unit condominium building overlooking Rideau Hall which was carefully designed to reflect the architecture of its established New Edinburgh neighbourhood; The Charles Ogilvy Estates whose design offer garages tucked in the back of the houses, blazing design trails well in advance of urban design trends and guidelines that make this feature more common today; and the sold-out Kitsilano Court which features 22 single family homes beautifully appointed within a quiet cul-de-sac.
