Interior Design Trends Hitting Homes in 2020
Is it time for an inside refresh of your home’s furnishings, a new paint colour or maybe a whole new design style? As warmer weather approaches, and spring cleaning is among us, we are excited to see the latest interior design trends for 2020 starting to emerge. Leading with bold black and white, and mix in some real plants with earth tones, we’re really excited to see these trends come to life in your homes this year.
After researching some of what the top designers are saying, here’s a list of our favourites:
Bold Black & White
The contrast of black and white is such a dynamic duo – they are literally at opposite ends of the colour spectrum. Truly timeless in its style, the clash between dark and light works beautifully in many homes. There are so many ways to incorporate this yin and yang trend into your home, whether it be black chairs and sofas, with white throw pillows, or black and white quartz countertops and backsplashes – there are many textiles and pattern variations you can play with within these two tones.
Actually … Black Everything!
Black is definitely back! Many of our favourite interior designers are predicting that black “everything” from cabinets to sinks, paint, and countertops will be one of the top trends this year. Black walls, finishes, and furniture can make your home look high end and expensive. You can combat the problem of black making your room appear smaller by including contrasting colours (like black and white, see above trend). For fun, why not add a pop of colour to pillows or other décor items throughout the room.
… Doors, Too!
Painting an interior (or exterior) door in a rich colour like black or navy, adds warmth and character to your space. When you pair it with great hardware, a dark door can provide an artistic element to any room.
Biophilic Design
Biophilic design is a trend that incorporates human design with natural elements that doesn’t seem manufactured. It connects us with earth and the benefits that nature has on our lives. It’s been proven that biophilic design has health and environmental benefits. By adding a living wall or an area of plants to a corner of your home, will make your space more beautiful and improve your mental health, and the ecosystem. It’s also important to note that incorporating recycled wood for chairs and tables can contribute to your home’s “natural aesthetic” while still promoting an environmentally friendly home. Let’s do our part to give back to Mother Nature.
On That Note, Earth Tones
Our final trend is earth tones. Mixing the colours and textures that simulate the look of wood, metal, and foliage are being used for the making of furniture and home accessories. Earth tones like rich forest greens, taupe, and clay create a natural look creating more zen-like environments perfect for calm at the end of your busy days.
