Uniform Urban Developments: 2016 GOHBA Housing Design Awards Finalists
Each year, the Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association (GOHBA) hosts the Housing Design Awards in recognition of the best design in new home construction and renovation in the Greater Ottawa Region.
This year, Uniform Urban Developments has been named as a finalist in two exciting categories:
- Community of the Year for Kitsilano Court (with Barry J. Hobin and Associates Architects), and
- Production Homes: Single Detached (2,601 – 3,500 sq. ft.) – $750,000 and under for the Douglas Loft (available at Richardson Ridge in Kanata and The Orchard in Barrhaven), (with Barry J. Hobin and Associates Architects and 2H Interiors)
Ahead of the awards (presented at the annual GOHBA Housing Design Awards Gala on October 22nd), we thought we might share some background and details about each project.
Kitsilano Court
This project, comprised of 22 single-family homes oriented around a quiet cul-de-sac, was developed on a parcel of land at the edge of a neighbourhood green space known as Qualicum/Nanaimo Park. Each home in Kitsilano Court is an expression of either Craftsman or Modern design, architectural styles which compliment one another while also ensuring a variation in the streetscape.
The homes in Kitsilano Court feature distinct layout options, stunning bright open spaces, and considerable attention to detail. Each home in Kitsilano Court has an individual personality, connected by a shared sense of community which offers residents a rare opportunity to live within a strong and established Ottawa area, with fast and easy access to the urban core and countless amenities.
“We were living in the Craig Henry area and wanted something newer, but were not willing to move out to the suburbs to get it” shared Kitsilano Court resident Kelly Heard. “When we found Kitsilano Court in Qualicum, a brand new, small development in a mature neighbourhood far from the suburbs, we knew we were home. Add to that the design of our house, quality of materials used, and the attention to detail and we are definitely happy with our Uniform home.”
Douglas Loft
The Douglas bungalow loft, with clean craftsman lines, comfortable front porch and crisp white accents, offers a mix of practical single-storey living with unique second-storey spaces. Located at The Orchard in Barrhaven, the model’s interiors were inspired by the NoMad hotel in New York City and carefully designed to represent a well-travelled look with sophisticated dark rooms and richly textured furniture.
The front den sets the tone for this home, while the formal dining area flows into the beautiful, sleek kitchen that opens to a stunning family room area with a vaulted ceiling that extends upwards towards a versatile loft space. The Master suite complete with a walk-in closet and spacious ensuite is located at the back of the home while the second floor area provides additional accommodation.
All aspects of this home, its layout, front façade and interior finishes create a distinguished residence with strong features and charm.
